Ancient Fair of Saint Lucia

Comune di San Giovanni in Marignano

This is the thousand-year-old fair that revives traditions related to the winter solstice, the celebration of the patron saint of sight and the village's farming vocation.

In fact, the fair revives traditions related to the winter solstice, the celebration of the patron saint of sight and the farming vocation of the village of San Giovanni in Marignano. St. Lucy's Fair has such ancient origins that it can be said that the tradition of celebrating the patron saint of sight began together with the birth of San Giovanni in Marignano.

It was the archbishops of Ravenna, who owned estates in Sicily, who transplanted the tradition of celebrating St. Lucy, a Syracusan martyr, to the land of Romagna. Until 1805 it was held in the open countryside, near the small church of Santa Lucia al Moscolo, an ancient religious building recorded as early as 1333.

It was only after a Napoleonic decree that it was moved to what today
is Piazza Silvagni and it became a real fair, exchanging goods and livestock, among the most important in the valley.
