Good Friday procession
Comune di Montefiore Conca
The tradition of the Procession is revived with over 100 participants.
An evocative tradition rooted in the history of the village: lit by torches, the procession through the streets of the village accompanies the descent of Christ from Golgotha and his journey to the Holy Sepulchre.
The procession represents Jesus' descent from Golgotha and the deposition of his body in the Holy Sepulchre. About one hundred participants wear period costumes to revive a glimpse of Jerusalem two thousand years ago: among them are the members of the confraternities (wearing black and white hoods), the Madonnas, the apostles, Pontius Pilate, and the little angels (about fifteen children from Montefiore) who carry the symbols of Christ's passion.
A tradition rich in symbolism, references to the sacred scriptures and Christian rituality.
The celebrations begin in the morning, with the washing in milk of the statue of the dead Christ by the women of the village. The uniqueness of the Montefio procession derives from the fact that it does not celebrate the classic Via Crucis, or Christ's ascent to Calvary, but rather the descent of Jesus' body from Golgotha and the deposition in the Holy Sepulchre.
