Guided Tour of the Malatesta Temple
Comune di Rimini
In the heart of Rimini stands a jewel of art and history: the Malatesta Temple. Originally a 13th-century Franciscan church, it was transformed in the mid-15th century into an extraordinary monument at the behest of Sigismondo Pandolfo Malatesta, the powerful lord of the city, who wished to leave a sign of his greatness. Thanks to the mastery of Matteo de' Pasti for the interior and Leon Battista Alberti for the façade, an unparalleled work of art came to life, symbolising the ambitions of its patron.
The Temple houses authentic art treasures, such as Giotto's wooden crucifix, the sculptural group of the 'Madonna of the Water', the refined bas-reliefs by Agostino di Duccio and the famous fresco by Piero della Francesca, celebrating the figure of Sigismondo. The painting by Giorgio Vasari, 'Saint Francis Receives the Stigmata', also stands out among the wonders, adding further prestige to this fascinating place.
The Malatesta Temple, unfinished due to the conflicts between Malatesta and Pope Pius II Piccolomini, was a silent witness to complex historical events. Devastated by bombing during World War II, it was carefully rebuilt and restored to its splendour in 1950.
A guided tour will unveil the secrets, curiosities and stories of one of the most extraordinary monuments of the late Gothic and Italian Renaissance, for a journey through time that will leave an indelible mark on your memory.
