La Riviera Pet from the sea to the hills with your four-legged friend

Here the welcome is tail wagging. With new pedestrian promenades, equipped beaches and dog-friendly villages, the Rimini Riviera is the right place to enjoy a holiday with your four-legged friend.

First stop Sea, waterfront, dog beach

The new waterfronts from Bellaria Igea Marina to Cattolica are perfect for strolling with a sea view away from the traffic: benches, green areas, drinking fountains and rest areas accompany you from one district to the next.

Pet-friendly establishments are growing every season: fenced-in beach umbrellas for those who want a protected area, a dedicated shower area, play areas divided by size, mats, bowls, dog beds, even dryers and, in some bathing establishments, activities with dog trainers. Many lidos have reserved times or stretches of water where you can take a dip in safety: just ask at the beach and follow the signs.

Second stop Montefiore Conca, history and views to experience

In the hills it takes little to change the scene: same smart services, new horizons. Montefiore Conca is the right example: Orange Flag and in the network of Italy's Dog Villages, it offers a view that runs all the way to the sea.

The Malatesta Fortress - famous for the legend of Costanza Malatesta and Ormanno, two souls in love who still roam the castle - is also accessible to animals, and you can relive the history and legends of the place in a tale that never goes out of fashion.

After the castle, we recommend a stop at the Big Bench for an "oversize" photo and off to the trails: over 60 km of cleaned, mapped and signposted CAI trails for light walks and treks with your four-legged companion.

Here nature and hospitality speak the same language.

Third stop Rocca Malatestiana of Verucchio, pet-friendly Middle Ages

A castle that you can see from afar, resting on the 'rock' with a view that stretches from the Apennines to the Riviera: the Rocca Malatestiana of Verucchio is the perfect destination to experience together with your four-legged friend.

Dogs of all sizes are welcome inside, provided they are on a leash and respectful of other visitors; the same welcome also goes to the nearby Municipal Archaeological Museum, where the Villanovan finds tell a very ancient story to be discovered together.

You are in one of the most beautiful villages in Italy: walk up the cobbled street, enter the courtyards and look out from the walkways, then look for a shady corner for a water break. Amidst legends (Costanza and Ormanno never go out of fashion), panoramic views and picture-postcard silences, culture here is truly dog-friendly.

Tips for true professionals

  • Water always with you: water bottle and collapsible bowl, plus a stop in the shade during hot hours.
  • Smart regulations: look for information on the beach about the times and stretches of bathing allowed with your pooch, so bathing is a pleasure for everyone.
  • Enjoy hilltop castles at sunset: villages and paths in the afternoon have perfect light and the right temperature for four-legged friends.
