MICRO – Museum of the found object

"MICRO – Museo dell'oggetto ritrovato" (MICRO – Museum of the found object) is a museum project conceived by Gabriele Geminiani, a serial collector, accumulator, and indexer of objects and fragments of things lost in time and space – things that can give rise to stories that are told in publishing efforts and exhibitions in deconsecrated and inaccessible places.

This is how MICRO came into being: a permanent exhibition of objects located inside Torrione delle Mura di San Giorgio (a tower on the city walls) in Verucchio, presenting a unique and profound reflection upon the relationship between people, objects, and the passage of time.

The project dates to its founder’s adolescence when, in the river near his home, he began discovering his first finds, items that all had certain, shared characteristics like marginalization and suffering – the latter being the result of deterioration caused by people and by the whims of the weather. These forgotten “creatures” held for Gabriele a heart-wrenching yet irresistible charm that we may sum up in three words: the “aesthetics of suffering.”

The exhibition is therefore the result of years devoted to collecting and conserving objects and fragments found and stowed in the rooms of his home while waiting to give them their redemption: from scraps found in the bed of the Conca river to the wreckage cast off by winter storms and discoveries in so-called “non-places” like urban peripheries, railway stations, town squares, and roadsides.

Immense in bulk, this accumulation consists mainly of plastic items collected along the central Adriatic coasts, also belonging to past decades (starting from the 1960s): a sampling of objects with small toys including tin soldiers, lighters, beach slippers, detergent containers, etc.

One of the museum’s unique features is its section dedicated to the “Publishing of things” – books printed also using manual press techniques, and appreciated by both art collectors and bibliophiles.
