The Code of the Passion: Bellini and Mantegna in the Mirror

Comune di Rimini

An exhibition catalogue dedicated to two masterpieces of the Italian Renaissance.

Bellini’s Pietà and Mantegna’s Saint Sebastian

Following exhibitions at the Ca’ d’Oro in Venice and in New York, Giovanni Bellini’s restored Pietà returns to Rimini, where it is displayed alongside Andrea Mantegna’s dramatic Saint Sebastian from the Franchetti collection.

Housed in the Manica Lunga wing of the ‘Luigi Tonini’ City Museum, the juxtaposition of the two works highlights the different interpretations of the theme of the Passion and the deep artistic and cultural ties between Bellini and Mantegna, who had been brothers-in-law since 1453.

The exhibition also explores the historical relationship between Rimini and Venice, featuring a precious rarity from a private collection: a clipeus bearing the initials and coat of arms of Roberto Malatesta, known as ‘il Magnifico’, which some scholars have linked to the commission of Bellini’s Pietà.
