Riccione commemorates Angelo Bergamonti with a ceremony and exhibition on 13 April

Comune di Riccione

The Municipality of Riccione, in collaboration with the Moto Club Arcione association, is organising a special event to pay homage to the great motorcycling rider Angelo Bergamonti.
The event, sponsored by the Municipality of Riccione, will be held on Sunday 13 April with a series of events that will kick off at 10 a.m. with the inauguration of an exhibition dedicated to the champion. The exhibition will be set up in the hall of the Palazzo del Turismo and will be open to the public with free admission until 6pm.
At 11 a.m., a commemoration ceremony will be held at the stele that commemorates him, located on the Lungomare della Repubblica, at the height of beach 68, at the very spot where the driver lost his life during a race on Riccione's street circuit on 4 April 1971.
During the course of the day, visitors will have the opportunity to relive Bergamonti's career through photographs, historical footage of the competitions that took place along Riccione's seafront, and some personal memories of the champion.
The commemoration ceremony, which will be held at 11 a.m. on the occasion of the fifty-fourth anniversary of the rider's death, will be attended on the seafront by members of the Moto Club Arcione association, representatives of the Riccione municipal administration, Angelo Bergamonti's family, the 'Moto Club A. Bergamonti' of Gussola, representatives of the Italian Motorcycle Federation (F.M.I., which is sponsoring the event) and motorcycling enthusiasts.
The initiative celebrates one of the best-loved riders in Italian motorcycling and enhances the historical heritage of motorbike racing, part of Riccione's tradition.

ANGELO BERGAMONTI
Angelo Bergamonti, born in Gussola on 18 March 1939, was one of the most promising riders in Italian motorcycling, with numerous successes, including the title of Italian champion in hill-climbs and important placings in the MotoGP. Bergamonti is best known for his skills on MV Agusta motorbikes, with which he won the Spanish Grand Prix in 1970, in the 350 and 500 classes.

Unfortunately, on 4 April 1971, during the Temporada Romagnola in Riccione, Bergamonti lost his life in a tragic accident just as he was fighting for victory with Giacomo Agostini, also riding an MV Agusta. Bergamonti's death marked the end of racing on roads normally open to traffic, representing a turning point for motorbike racing in Italy.
