Rimini between history and the sea: from the Old Fish Market to the Borgo dei Pescatori

Comune di Rimini

Accompanied by a guide, you will discover Rimini and its historical connection with the sea, through a route among symbolic places and maritime traditions.

The tour touches on Porta Galliana, an ancient 13th-century mediaeval gate overlooking the canal-harbour, a strategic connection point between the city and the ancient Roman port, through which goods, fishermen and boats passed.

Continue to the Vecchia Pescheria (Old Fish Market), built in 1747 to a design by Giovan Francesco Buonamici: an elegant Istrian stone market with marble stalls and fountains, for centuries the heart of the fish trade and popular city life. Nearby, the Piazzetta delle Poveracce recalls the presence of women engaged in the processing and sale of fish.

Finally, we will reach Borgo San Giuliano, a historic fishermen's quarter outside the walls, with colourful houses and characteristic alleys. Once inhabited by families linked to fishing, today it preserves the authentic soul of the fishing village and is enriched by murals dedicated to neighbourhood life and Federico Fellini.

A short but rich itinerary to get to know the most authentic Rimini and its deep relationship with the fishing industry.
