Poetry and nature in the Montefeltro of Rimini 4 unique stages from Pennabilli to Sassofeltrio

Four stages in 24 intense hours. From Pennabilli to Sassofeltrio, visit the poetic and green soul of Rimini's Montefeltro, amidst ruins that speak of history, woods and nature, solitary heights and a scenic finale that closes this perfect circle.

Duration: 2 days

Km: 55

Means of transport: car

First stop Sassofeltrio, Montefeltro terrace

Sassofeltrio, on a spur of chalky rock, overlooks the valley from above. The locality of Sant'Anastasio is known for the spring of sulphurous and alkaline waters with beneficial properties, while at the highest point of the village a panoramic park with fixed binoculars has earned this area the name 'Terrace of Montefeltro'.

The Sentiero delle Acque Sulfuree (Sulphurous Water Trail) in the Sant'Anastasio Valley is a 10-13 km loop hiking route that starts from Ca' Micci near Monte San Paolo: views of the Marecchia Valley and Monte Fumaiolo, pastures, woods and paved stretches - perfect for light trekking or trail running, with top spots such as Monte Grillo.

Second stop Montecopiolo, the green stage

Montecopiolo is the green stage of the itinerary: paths, woods, snow in winter and part of the territory included in the Sasso Simone and Simoncello Park. Around Villagrande are the ruins of the main castle of Montecopiolo and the castle of Monte Acuto (now Monte San Marco), which tell of the strategic past of these heights. A place where history intertwines with nature, ideal for a contemplative break among the trees.

Third stop Pennabilli, town of the soul of Tonino Guerra

Pennabilli is the "town of the soul" of Tonino Guerra, poet and screenwriter who chose to live and create here, transforming the town and the Marecchia Valley into a diffuse museum: "The Places of the Soul". Poetic installations such as the Garden of Forgotten Fruits, the Shelter of Abandoned Madonnas, the Road of Sundials, the Angel with a Moustache, the Sanctuary of Thoughts, the Petrified Garden and the Madonna of the Snow Rectangle - all free to visit from 9 am to 7 pm - awaken memories and meditations.

Traces of the ancient fortresses of Penna and Billi remain on the two cliffs, while the Fountain of Peace celebrates the end of disputes. Churches, convents, 'words on the walls' with ceramic biographies of local personalities invite you to slow and curious stops.

Fourth stop Casteldelci, a stone village at the foot of Monte Fumaiolo

Casteldelci goes up to 1,000 metres, at the foot of Monte Fumaiolo, among silent valleys and unspoilt landscapes. Here you will find the Ponte Vecchio bridge over the torrent, the historic towers (Torre del Monte, Torre Campanaria, Gattara), the Colarieti House Museum with prehistoric and Roman remains.

Paths, historic mule tracks and routes towards Fumaiolo make Casteldelci the ideal base for trekking, mountain biking and immersion in Apennine nature, a "green sea" of endless hills and woods.

Pro tips for every stop

  • Pennabilli: prioritise the Orto dei Frutti Dimenticati (Garden of Forgotten Fruits) and 'words on the walls' - 90 minutes is enough for the must-see.
  • Montecopiolo: park in Villagrande and walk 20 minutes to the ruins - easy path, perfect for photos in the woods of the Sasso Simone Park.
  • Sassofeltrio: walk along the Sentiero Acque Sulfuree (Sulphurous Water Trail) from Ca' Micci (2-3h moderate loop) - bring a bottle of water and hiking shoes essential for the views of Fumaiolo.
